Research expertise

Fons Van Gompel graduated as a “Doctor in de genees-, heel-, en verloskunde” at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in 1978. In 1983 he became Specialist in Internal Medicine, in 1986 Specialist in Nuclear Medicine, and in 1986 he obtained the diploma of Tropical Medicine (Institute for Tropical Medicine Antwerp)

In March 1986 he started working as a freelance physician in the Medical Services of the IMT, with a brief intermezzo in Africa from October 1986 until April 1987 . In 1997 he became member of the staff and since 2000 he is the chief physician. He is responsible for the pretravel service (handouts, website, brochures).

Besides teaching tropical and travel medicine in the IMTA postgraduate course, he is teaching also in the Cursus Tropenziekten in het Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen (KIT) Amsterdam and he gives courses i n clinical parasitology, imported diseases and pre-travel medicine at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and at the University of Antwerp (UA)

Furthermore, he is:

  • Co-founder and president of the Belgian Scientific Study Group on Travel Medicine.
  • Active member of the International Society of Travel Medicine (member of the scientific comitee of the congresses 2001; 2003; 2005; 2007; 2009; member of the international examination commitee).
  • Member of the governmental Belgian High Health Council (Hoge Gezondheidsraad) – section Vaccinations & section Bioterrorism.
  • Member of the committee on biological agents of the “Fonds voor Beroepsziekten / Fonds des Maladies Professionnelles”.
  • Member of the editorial board Tropical Medicine & International Health., and Journal of Travel Medicine
  • Member of the travel medicine experts who advised on the WHO booklet “International Travel and Health” 2002-2008
