Personal profile

Research expertise

Anne Buvé graduated as a medical doctor in 1978. In 1989-1990 she did the Msc Epidemiology at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine which was the start of her career in research. Between 1990 and 1994 she acted as epidemiologist on a research project examining the cost of ilness in adults in Zambia (PI: Susan Foster, lecturer health economics at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine). Through this work she became interested in the epidemiology of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections in sub-Saharan Africa.

In 1993 she joined the Department of Microbiology at the Institute of Tropical Medicine as pre-doctoral researcher. The first project for which she took scientific responsibility was a operations research project on case detection and management of sexually transmitted infections in Mwanza, Tanzania (funded by the EC and in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine). However, her main research interest was the heterogeneity of HIV epidemics in sub-Saharan Africa. She coordinated a large study in four cities in sub-Saharan Africa which led her to writing a PhD entitled "Factors determining the differential spread of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa." (University of Antwerp, Belgium).

Research interests

  • Epidemiology of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, with focus on sub-Saharan Africa and South-East Asia.
  • Factors (biological, behavioural and contextual) that determine the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections between commercial sex workers and their clients, and among young people.
  • Development of interventions to reduce the spread of HIV with a focus on young women.

Of late she also became interested in ethical issues in research conducted in low and middle income countries.
