Research expertise
Bea Vuylsteke was trained as a physician at the University of Leuven, Belgium, where she received her M.D. in 1984. After her studies, she worked for Médecins sans Frontières in Mali, Chad, Mozambique and Ethiopia.
In 1992, she joined the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, where she worked as advisor on Sexually Transmitted Infections in developing countries, including Tanzania, Rwanda, Brasil and South Africa.
From 1999 to 2010 she was based in Côte d’Ivoire, providing technical assistance and leadership for the design and evaluation of HIV prevention programs among sex workers.
She is back at ITM since July 2010.
Research
- Evaluation of the quality, coverage and impact of HIV prevention interventions, including among high risk populations
- Operations research on situation analysis and design of HIV prevention interventions among high risk populations
- Epidemiology of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, with focus on highly vulnerable populations
- Validation of diagnostic algorithms for sexually transmitted infections in resource poor settings

- HIV Prevention among Female Sex Workers in Côte d’Ivoire and Kenya (frame work agreement 3.02)
- Operations Research on preventive behaviour, STI and HIV among Men who have Sex with Men in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire (CDC PEPFAR)
