Research expertise
Eric Florence graduated as medical doctor from the Université Catholique de Louvain in 1996.
After a postgraduate in tropical medicine at the Institute of Tropical Medicine he worked with Médecins sans Frontières in Kenya. In 2001 and 2002, he carried out short time consultancy missions for the German Cooperation Agency (GTZ) and the Ministry of Health in Kinshasa and Kigali working on availibility of antiretroviral drugs in resource limited settings. In 2003 he collaborated with the Department of Infectious Diseases, Hospital Clínic in Barcelona on immuno-pathology of HIV infection and immune-based therapies.
He obtained his PhD in Medical Sciences in 2004 at the University of Antwerp and Institute of Tropical Medicine (Doctoral thesis "Antiretroviral treatment in HIV infected adults: current drawbacks and pitfalls" promotor: R. Colebunders). He specialised further in Internal Medecine and Intensive Care at the University of Antwerp.
Eric Florence is responsible for the HIV/STD outpatient department of the Institute of Tropical Medicine since June 2008.
