Teaching expertise
Zolfo Maria, M.D., PhD, specialist in Infectious Diseases (Catholic University, Rome). She trained in Tropical Diseases at Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM), Antwerp, in 1998 and worked from 1999 until 2003 for Medicus Mundi Belgium in Zimbabwe. Since 2003, she has worked at the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, in the HIV/AIDS unit, overseas subunit, responsible for the Telemedicine project, which provided remote-based advice on HIV/AIDS care to colleagues working in low resource settings and on the eSCART distance learning course. Since 2012 she is coordinating the educational activities at the Clinical Science Department in ITM along with the SCREM course and the Master of Sciences in Tropical Medicine (MTM).
She is particularly interested in the topics of AIDS care in resource-limited settings, eMTCT, and distance/blended learning.
In her role as the MTM programme coordinator, Dr. Maria Zolfo oversees various pivotal aspects of the programme. Collaborating closely with MTM programme director, she ensures meticulous candidate selection and maintains a seamless flow of information between students, teaching staff, the coordination team and research unites heads about MTM students progresses. She organizes monthly "MTM Gathering Together" sessions, offering a platform for comprehensive discussions on the course curriculum, study plans, and the progress of MTM students’ thesis work. Moreover, Dr. Zolfo organizes monthly coordination meetings involving programme directors and administrative staff: this consistent engagement guarantees ongoing support and facilitates the continual progress tracking of the student cohort.
In her role as course coordinator, provides support to both faculty and students within the educational domain, with detailed course and programme scheduling, adept coordination of various educational programmes and events, and the provision of essential administrative assistance. Dr. Zolfo is at the forefront of curriculum development, ensuring its relevance and effectiveness in crafting engaging teaching materials.
