Personal profile

Research expertise

I am a professor in Public Health and Health Policy, esp. in fragile states. Specific focus on DRC, Guinea, Cambodia and Ethiopia. Teaching public health in MPH: national health system and health policy. PhD on refugee health (Guinea). Policy support to Belgian Development Cooperation.

Research areas: relation between disease control programs & health systems strengthening; Universal Health Coverage and Global Health Security. Covid-19; Human resource policies; delivery models of ART and diabetes as chronic lifelong-conditions (H2020-SCUBY); Global Health Initiatives and global health policies;  refugee health; Financial access for the poor (especially Health Equity Funds in Cambodia); malaria treatment in Cambodia.

Guidance of PhD students at ITM-Antwerp, Free University Brussels.

Coordinator of the Emerging Voices 4 Global Health training and network (www.ev4gh.net), organised since 2010, in connection with the Global Symposia on Health Systems Research (2010 Montreux, 2012 Beijing, 2014 Cape Town, 2016 Vancouver, 2018 Liverpool, 2020 Dubai).

Institutional collaborations with academic partners in Guinea, DRC and Cambodia.

Education: MD, DTMH, MPH, PhD

Professional experience: 10 years with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in Peru, Sudan, Guinea & Cambodia. 20 years at Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp.

Previously:

Principal investigator of many research projects: Health systems and access for the poor, Cambodia & China (INCO-PovIll); Impact of AIDS on health systems in Southern Africa, especially on human resources for health (INCO-ARVMAC); Impact of new international funding mechanisms on national health policies (INCO-GHIs); Goals & Governance for Health (Go4health); .

Member of TERG of Global Fund (2008-2015).

SARChI chair in Health Systems, Complexity and Social Change at School of Public Health, University of the Western Cape (UWC), South Africa (January 2013 - December 2015).

Lecturer at the Paris School of International Affairs, Sciences-Po, concentration global health, module on health systems and health systems strengthening.
