Description
Aim
The aim of the proposed PhD study program is to study the life cycle and the zoonotic potential of a new Opisthorchis species that was discovered recently by my research group in ducks in Central Vietnam.
Objectives and rationale
1. To study the occurrence of the new Opisthorchis species in different animal species, including domestic animals and wildlife (domestic and wild ducks, chicken, stork, dog, cat, pig), and in humans;
2. To identify both the first (snail) and second (fish) intermediate host species of this new Opisthorchis species;
3. To determine the potential of zoonotic infection of this new Opisthorchis species;
4. To identify risk factors of Opisthorchiasis caused by the new Opisthorchis species.
