Layman's description
To achieve universal health coverage, ensuring access to healthcare without discrimination, especially for the poor, vulnerable and marginalized segments of the population is of critical importance. Hence, the PhD study aims to specifically target minorities and populations at risk, namely: (A) Pregnant women, (B) Politically excluded groups and (C) Displaced/relocated populations in conflict and disaster settings. This PhD will revolve around access to health services and health systems improvement with a focus on the aforementioned vulnerable populations. In particular, the guiding thread is to exploit and demonstrate the added value of the use of novel types of data and methods in pushing the boundaries of accessibility modelling. The PhD study will further explore the potential of geospatial tools like AccessMod, a software developed and maintained by Prof. Ray’s group and the World Health Organization since 2005, in addressing the inequities impeding access to health services for minorities and populations at risk. Finally, the PhD will be receptive to opportunities that may arise for studying climate change factors which will ultimately result in the emergence of new populations at risk.
