Abstract
The Coulter Counter analysis of the cellular volume (CV) of T. b. gambiense permitted us to characterize, at day 75 of the infection, the morphology of this parasite living, at the same moment, in the blood and in the cerebral interstitium space. The frequency distribution of these CV showed the pleomorphic character of these two parasite populations. In spite of important overlapping of the measurements the two populations, the bloodform trypanosomes showed, at the indicated observation period, a mean CV (31.65 fl) statistically greater (P < 0.001) than this of the cerebral interstitial trypanosomes (23.68 fl). This fact is in agreement with the hypothesis of asynchronic development of T. b. gambiense into the mammalian host tissue.
