Abstract
A simple device using compressed air for the rearing of F1 progeny from single females of Simulium squamosum was tried out. The device is composed of a glass aquarium in which a regular waterflow is produced by means of two air pumps and a series of glass pipettes. The larvae and pupae develop onto the traject of the air bulles. The rates of development is rapid and is ranking as high as in the field at a given temperature. The size of last stage larvae allows cytotaxonomic determination of species. The average mortality is 22% (.+-. 11%) on the sixteenth day after hatching. Electric power failures are coped with as follows: larvae remain immersed and the device is kept running using a 12 volt battery via an automatic release-gear and a 12 V D/C-220 V A/C transformer. Since glass material is used, the various developmental stages are easily observed. The device is made with local resources, is inexpensive and not cumbersome.
