Abstract
For laboratory reared Simulium damnosum s.l., in the presence of Eichhornia crassipes, the preimaginal development was 1.76 times longer and the daily mortality rate 7 times higher than was observed in rearings without the water hyacinth. Eichhornia crassipes does not seem to exert a toxic influence; nutritional competition between the aquatic plant and the larvae might explain this phenomenon. The rate of sequestration of particles in suspension by E. crassipes in aquarium is about 30% after 5 days.
