Abstract

Routine surveillance programmes mainly focus on known diseases and clinical syndromes of local importance. However, to be prepared for pathogen X, early detection of unusual illnesses or new pathogens is crucial. With the risk of global spread, timely, early detection is becoming increasingly important for detecting outbreaks while they can still be contained.
